5 Scientists Share $15-Million for Inaugural Mathematics Prize

Five scientists have been awarded the first Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, which carries $3-million in awards for each recipient, reports The New York Times. The award was established by Yuri Milner, a Russian entrepreneur, and Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook.

It is the third in a collection of similar awards established by Mr. Milner; in 2012 his foundation established a prize for achievement in physics, and last year, in concert with a group of Internet entrepreneurs including Mr. Zuckerberg, he began an award for the life sciences.

The five winners are: Simon Donaldson, of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and Imperial College London; Maxim Kontsevich, of the Institute of Advanced Scientific Studies, in France; Jacob Lurie, of Harvard University; Terence Tao, of the University of California at Los Angeles; and Richard Taylor, of the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, N.J.

Starting next year, Mr. Milner said, eight Breakthrough Prizes will be awarded each year: six in the life sciences, one in physics, and one in mathematics. Each will carry a $3-million award.
