Abstract:  In this talk, we study the word map w: SU(2)xSU(2) --> SU(2) where w is a word in the free group of rank 2. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the surjectivity of the word map by using the trace polynomials.

As applications of our method, we give examples of words for which the word map is not surjective. For families of words of the form [[a,b],[a,b^n]] and [[a,b],[a^2,b^n]], we can tell whether the word map is surjective or not.
