Abstract: I will first describe Shor's algorithm, which a large-scale quantum computer, if one is ever built, could use to break RSA cryptography by factoring the RSA modulus N=pq. Then I will discuss general questions of the impact of quantum computing and the likelihood that it will be practical in the foreseeable future.
