Abstract: Liquid crystals are matter in a state which exhibits properties of both liquids and solid crystals. In this talk I will survey around an open problem regarding symmetry of the so-called ``defects'' in the Landau - de Gennes model for liquid crystals in nematic (thread-like) phase. Joint work with R. Ignat, V. Slastikov and A. Zarnescu.
