Geometry and Topology of Singular Varieties. Theory and Applications
Hanoi, 2-14 December 2013

After developments of Singularity theory, following Thom and Whitney, the theory has been applied to many fields in mathematics: Topology, Geometry, Algebra, ... and in other sciences. Singularity theory allows to classify and to explain what are possible changes in behavior of phenomena.

Motivation of this CIMPA school is to train Ph. D. students, young researchers and lecturers to be able to apply singularity theory to classify behavior changes and to explain such modifications not only in mathematical situations but also in related sciences. That is the reason for which the school will comprise theoretical courses in singularity theory and its applications in fields like robotics, medical imaging, cosmology,...

The school aims to

  • provide an introduction to some current problems of the field for young postgraduate students, young researchers and mathematicians in the region.
  • present recent advances and perspectives in singularity theory and its applications for more specialized researchers.

The aimed region is globally South Asia

The school will consists of 7 courses:

  1. Bilipschitz geometry of surface singularities, given by Anne Pichon, IML, Aix - Marseille University, France.
  2. Introduction to fundamental group of the plane curves, given by Mutsuo Oka, Tokyo University of Science, Japan.
  3. Applications of Legendrian/Lagrangian singularity theory to Lorentz differential geometry, given by Shyuichi Izumiya, Hokkaido University, Japan.
  4. Various facets of arrangements of hyperplanes, given by Hiroaki Terao, Hokkaido University, Japan.
  5. Topology of singularities, given by Le Dung Trang, Aix - Marseille University, France.
  6. Application of singularity theory in problems of medical imaging, given by Jim Damon, Chapel Hill, USA.
  7. An approach to valuations and local resolution of singularities, given by Bernard Tessier, Institut Mathématique de Jussieu-Paris, France

The official language of the school is English.

A workshop on singularity and its application will be organized by the VAST on three days following the school. All young researchers and lecturers are encouraged to participate in the workshop.
