Abstract: For an ideal I in a polynomial ring R, we define a new notion of initially regular sequences with respect to R/I. These sequences are constructible from combinatorial structures of the initial ideal of I and share properties with regular sequences. Particularly, their lengths give a bound for the depth of R/I. We shall further discuss various situation where initially regular sequences are also regular sequences
