Abstract: Extremal ideals were introduced by Cooper et. al. For a fixed integer $q$, there exists a squarefree monomial ideal $E_q$ such that the total betti numbers of $E_q^r give an upper bound for the total betti numbers of $I^r$, for any squarefree monomial ideal $I$. In other words, $E_q$, in the class of all squarefree monomial ideals with $q$ generators, is a representative that exhibits extremal behaviors. We will discuss the symbolic powers and the integral closure of powers of $E_q$, and their implication for all squarefree monomial ideals with $q$ generators.
