Abstract: Based on experiences in several developing countries, as well as in the U.S. and (many years ago) in the Soviet Union, I will discuss some lessons about the best way to prepare future mathematicians for a rewarding career. Among the issues I will address are: preparing students for work on applications and in interdisciplinary teams, humanities background for mathematicians, certain advantages of the U.S. system at the advanced level, relation between research and teaching, and mathematicians' role in society.
