Abstract: Full waveform inversion (FWI) is a challenging data-fitting procedure based on full wavefield modeling to extract quantitative information from seismograms. This problem has been studied for several dedicates as its results play a significant role in the petroleum exploration and production industry. However, it has not been used widely in the petroleum industry because it requires extremely heavy computing time and I/O data.

In this presentation, I would like to show the basic idea of FWI from engineering point of view and its application to imaging problem in the petroleum exploration as well as the key challenges of FWI.
