Hurwitz asked in 1892 whether every numerical semigroup could be the semigroup of pole orders of otherwise holomorphic functions at some point on some Riemann Surface. I'll explain the meaning of this question and some of the history of attempts to resolve it. Finally, I will show how an observation about free resolutions led Frank Schreyer and myself to discover a new class of examples of non-Weierstrass semigroups.
