Fibrations by singular curves in positive characteristic

Tóm tắt: By the Bertini-Sard theorem, in characteristic zero almost every fiber of a dominant morphism between two smooth algebraic varieties is smooth. This is no longer the case in positive characteristic, as was first observed by Zariski in the 1940s. In other words, in positive characteristic there can exist fibrations with the property that every fiber is singular. In this talk I will present a general framework to study this phenomenon in the specific situation where the fibers are singular curves. We will see that there is an unexpected connection between these fibrations and the theory of algebraic function fields.
