Abstract:
There are a few instances in algebraic and arithmetic geometry of similar, yet of different nature, theories of special subvarieties. For example, when the ambient space is a complex affine torus, semi-abelian variety, Shimura variety, etc. Part of the theory is the fact that the special subvarieties are characterized as those subvarieties with a Zariski dense set of special points. In this talk we show in the case of the complex affine tori, by viewing them as moduli of local systems, how to generate many such special subvarieties from any natural, possibly derived, functor related to smooth quasi-projective varieties.
