Abstract: We discuss construction of irreducible polynomials representations of the general linear group $GL_m(\mathbb{C})$. These representations are parametrized by Young diagrams $\lambda$ with at most $m$ rows and have bases corresponding to Young tableaux with entries from $\{1,…,m\}$. They can also be constructed from representations of symmetric groups.  These representations give the full list of irreducible representations of $GL_m(C)$. Some open problems on representations of general linear groups over fields of positive characteristic are also briefly presented.
