Abstract: Complex phenomena such as diffusion, heat conduction and the dynamics of molecular systems, are often described by partial differential equations of which (generalized) gradient flows are an important class. A gradient-flow structure has been exploited to obtain additional information about the evolution, such as existence and stability of solutions.

The aim of this talk is twofold. Firstly, we establish a connection, via large deviation principle, between gradient-flow structures and microscopic stochastic processes. We show how the former can be derived and understood from the latter. Secondly, using the connection, we provide new methods for the bridging of spatial and temporal scales, which is a key challenge in many scientific and technological problems.
