Abstract: Polynomial functors occur naturally in algebra and topology. They have been introduced by T. Goodwillie in homotopy theory and are one of the most important tools in modern homotopy theory. In algebra they have "re-appeared" in the context of of Mac lane homology; they play an important role for the explicit computation of stable homology with coefficients of classical groups.  The polynomial functors  will be introduced in both situations; then one will discuss in this context the role played by the Steinberg representations of classical groups. One will in particular give a construction of these representations in this context, then recall some basic constructions in homotopy theory and show how to use the representation in this setting.
