Abstract: A hallmark in the theory of Diophantine approximation is Roth's theorem concerning approximations of algebraic numbers by rational numbers. This theorem asserts that given an algebraic number, there are only finitely many rational numbers approximating it with the accuracy better than the reciprocal square of the heights of these rational numbers. Roth's theorem had a long history before it and was vastly generalised by Schmidt subspace theorems. This very elementary talk is an attempt to sketch the beautiful development of these theorems. A part of the talk is devoted to explaining how Roth proved his theorem.
