Abstract:
In the early 1980s, Beilinson and Lichtenbaum independently conjectured the existence of the so-called motivic cohomology for algebraic varieties. This cohomology is an algebraic version of singular cohomology for topological spaces. Many attempts have been made to construct this theory, due to Bloch, Lichtenbaum, Friedlander, Suslin, Levine, Voevodsky and others.
In this talk, I will explain the basic idea of motivic cohomology and its construction. I will also describe how to apply this machinery to prove results in algebra and algebraic geometry.
